Finding the Best Vet in Columbus: Top 5 Picks for Pet Owners

vet-in-columbus
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Range of Medical Services. It’s vital that a clinic can handle everything from itchy ears to major surgeries. We looked for facilities that provide a broad spectrum of care to avoid constant referrals.

Availability and Hours. Emergencies and busy work schedules don’t always align with a standard nine-to-five day. We prioritized clinics that offer extended evening hours or round-the-clock emergency assistance.

Diagnostic Technology. Having modern tools like digital X-rays and on-site labs leads to faster answers and better outcomes. Our selection includes hospitals that invest in up-to-date medical equipment for precise results.

Communication Style. A vet who listens to your concerns and explains treatment options clearly makes a massive difference. We chose places where the medical staff treats pet owners as active partners in the healing process.

Finding a trustworthy place for your animal family can feel like an overwhelming task when you move to a new area.

Whether you’re dealing with a midnight emergency or just looking for a steady hand for puppy vaccinations, choosing the best vet in Columbus is a major milestone for any pet parent.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking into which clinics truly stand out for their medical expertise and compassionate staff.

Between high-tech university facilities and cozy neighborhood clinics, this list narrows down the top choices so you can focus on the cuddles instead of the stress.

How much does vet care cost in Columbus?

Providing quality medical care for your pet in Columbus involves a range of fees depending on the urgency of the situation.

1. Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic

Website: https://vmc.vet.osu.edu/locations/primary-care

Address: 655 Vernon L. Tharp St

Contact: (614) 292-1573

Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Walking into a university-led environment like this one at OSU (The Ohio State University) feels a bit different than your average neighborhood office.

Senior veterinary students lead the primary care here, applying their critical thinking skills under the direct coaching of licensed faculty veterinarians.

I really appreciate how the students sit down with you to discuss goals and treatment plans before the faculty even examines your pet. They even have a separate waiting area just for cats to keep them calm and away from barking dogs.

Plus, they accept Care Credit, which is a lifesaver for larger medical bills.

Just be prepared for the fact that appointments here move at an academic pace. Because it’s a teaching facility, you’ll likely spend more time in the exam room than you would at a standard clinic.

Pros

  • Separate cat waiting area
  • Near advanced specialty care
  • Accepts Care Credit
  • Direct faculty supervision

Cons

  • Slower appointment times

“There’s Never Any Judgement…”

We bring both of our huskies here, but I have to shout out Dr. Kolb in particular! He sees our anxious boy, Rex, and is always so sweet. Rex is aggressive at the vet but there’s never any judgement. They always make sure he’s safely supported so we can monitor his health and treat any underlying conditions he may have. Your patience and support for both our babies is appreciated beyond words. Thank you!

“The Care and Comfort Given Was Tremendous”

Literally, like the Mayo for dogs. Top care from the second we walked in with our dying dachshund (Addisonian crisis in a dog that was 11 1/2 and had never had a sign of Addison’s). They saved her life and, as I watched them with our girl and other dogs from near and far, the care and comfort given was tremendous.

Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Saturday: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital stands out for integrating standard wellness care with advanced, off-label therapeutic treatments. This includes Solensia for chronic pain management.

They handle everything from blood analysis to fracture repair in-house, which is incredibly convenient when you need answers fast. I also love that they offer comprehensive surgical procedures alongside routine testing.

And if you’re looking for dog trainers in Columbus, the staff here is a great resource for health articles and patient networking.

However, the schedule can be a bit of a hurdle for working parents. Being closed on Sundays and having very limited Saturday hours means you have to be quite proactive about booking your visits.

Pros

  • In-house urgent care
  • Advanced pain therapies
  • Robust patient resources
  • Fracture repair services

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Short Saturday hours

Website: https://www.veg.com/locations/ohio/easton

Address: 4056 Morse Road

Contact: (614) 333-9402

Hours: 24 Hours

Panic usually sets in the moment your pet gets sick in the middle of the night. Luckily, VEG ER for Pets is a 24-hour ER built to handle that stress.

They have completely eliminated the lobby waiting experience, allowing owners to stay with their pets throughout every single treatment.

I spoke with a friend who had to rush her Lab here at midnight, and she mentioned how comforting it was to have the doctors, like Dr. Christen Fout, perform exams right on the floor where the dog felt safest.

You even get direct phone access to speak with a vet immediately at any time. It’s the perfect place to keep on speed dial if you’re working with dog sitters in Columbus while you’re out of town.

The only real downside is that they only do emergency work. You can’t go here for your routine checkups or yearly vaccinations.

Pros

  • Open 24/7
  • No lobby waiting
  • Owners stay with pets
  • Direct vet phone access

Cons

  • Emergencies only

German Village Veterinary Hospital conveniently integrates urgent care directly into its regular business hours for existing clients.

When I swung by here once, I was impressed by how they manage specialized on-site ultrasound services and advanced care like veterinary cardiology.

Doctors like Dr. Morgan Smith are known for their expertise in more complex areas like ophthalmology, too.

Plus, they stay open until 7:00 PM for most of the week, which is a huge help if you can’t leave work early.

Just keep in mind that their weekend slots are incredibly precious. Because they close early on Saturday and are dark on Sunday, those appointments tend to fill up weeks in advance.

Pros

  • Urgent care for clients

Cons

“Great First Experience…”

The ENTIRE staff at this location is wonderful. Dr Schiller and her assistant, Emily, were fantastic, very knowledgeable and helpful with our new little rescue pup! The receptionist, I’m sad I didn’t catch their name, because they’re super personable and welcoming! Overall great first experience, and excited to watch our pup grow with their care.

“Would Highly Recommend”

Dr. Schiller is great, and all the staff is so sweet! They did amazing with my little girl yesterday. We just switched vets, & this was our first visit.  Everyone was so excited to meet Iris & take care of her. They really took their time and made it a priority to get to know Iris before anything else, which I really appreciated! Would highly recommend!

5. Banfield Pet Hospital – Columbus Northeast

banfield-pet-hospital-columbus-northeast

Website: https://www.banfield.com/locations/veterinarians/oh/columbus/eas

Address: 3713 Easton Market

Contact: 614-476-7566

Hours: Monday to Saturday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Keeping up with yearly shots and dental health can get expensive, but the proactive approach at Banfield Pet Hospital makes it much more manageable.

Located right inside the PetSmart at Easton Market, this facility uses Optimum Wellness Plans to help you bundle and afford preventive care throughout the year.

They have an in-house laboratory for same-day results and use digital radiography for a clear look at what’s going on internally.

It’s incredibly easy to drop your pet off for a checkup and then grab some high-quality food or a new toy while you wait. They’re even open on Sundays, which is a rarity for most non-emergency clinics.

However, there’s a bit of a cost catch for basic needs. To get a simple vaccination, you are strictly required to pay for a full office visit and physical consultation each time.

Pros

  • Affordable wellness plans
  • Same-day lab results
  • Open on Sundays
  • Modern dental X-rays

Cons

  • Required office visit fees for vaccinations

“Very Thankful…”

Everyone at the awesome is amazing and willing to help! My dog Daisy is super anxious, pants a lot and gets easily overwhelmed. Cherokee made sure that Daisy was supported and that she was comfortable before being examined and having her shots. Very thankful for the team going the extra bit for my comfort and my dogs.
