The 5 Best Kindergartens in Columbus for Early Academic Growth

kindergartens-in-columbus
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Curriculum Quality: We evaluated the educational frameworks each school uses to build early academic skills. Programs that prioritize structured play alongside cognitive development scored higher in our assessment.

Schedule Flexibility: Working parents need practical childcare solutions that align with standard office hours. We looked closely at drop-off and pick-up times to ensure they accommodate busy daily routines.

Facility Environment: A safe and clean learning space is essential for young students. We examined the indoor classrooms and outdoor play areas for safety and hygienic practices.

Teacher Dedication: The longevity and warmth of the teaching staff profoundly impact a child's early schooling experience. We prioritized schools where faculty members show genuine care and low turnover rates.

Finding the right fit for your little one can feel like an overwhelming task. As parents, we want a safe, nurturing environment that also builds a strong educational foundation from the very start.

When you factor in work schedules, commuting routes, and different learning needs, the decision can feel even more complex.

That’s why we’ve put together a guide to the best kindergartens in Columbus. These options focus on early education programs that balance care, structure, and supportive learning environments for young children.

1. Primrose School of Columbus Downtown

primrose-school-of-columbus-downtown

Website: https://www.primroseschools.com/

Address: 101 E. Town St, Columbus, OH 43215

Contact: (614) 429-1900

Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Primrose School of Columbus Downtown fits neatly into the needs of downtown-working parents who need both structure and flexibility in one place.

Their learning approach combines purposeful play with guided instruction. This helps children build early cognitive skills while still focusing on social and emotional development.

Many parents also appreciate the extended care hours, especially when their meetings run late or plans shift unexpectedly.

The added character development program also stands out. It weaves values like compassion and respect into everyday learning rather than treating them as separate lessons.

The curriculum itself introduces early math and science concepts in a way that keeps kids engaged and curious. Plus, the facility’s strict cleanliness standards help reduce common seasonal illnesses.

The main drawback is purely logistical. Being located on East Town Street means morning traffic can get heavy, and parking isn’t always easy.

Pros

  • Extended care hours
  • Focuses on early math and science
  • Strict daily sanitation standards
  • Frequent updates for parents

Cons

  • Heavy morning traffic
  • Frustrating parking situation

Customer Reviews:

Highly recommended!

Great teachers, great staff. Very communicative with parents about any issues. They engage with the kids and challenge the kids educationally and do regular fun activities with them (Gator Dave, Kona Ice Day, Splash Days during the summer, etc.) – highly recommend!

Grateful to be part of such a nurturing and supportive community!

Our family absolutely loves Primrose! Our child, who is now almost 2 years old, has been attending since they were just 4 months old, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. The combination of a thoughtfully designed curriculum and the genuine love and care from the teachers has had an incredible positive impact on our child’s growth and development. It’s heartwarming to see how much they enjoy going to ‘school’ each day, excited to see their teachers and friends. We are so grateful to be part of such a nurturing and supportive community!

2. Our Lady of Bethlehem School and Childcare

Address: 4567 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43214

Contact: (614) 459-8285

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Our Lady of Bethlehem School and Childcare stands out immediately for its physical environment. It has four acres of green space that gives children room to explore, play, and learn outdoors in a way many traditional preschools simply can’t match.

As a Catholic school, faith formation is woven directly into the daily routine. Families who prioritize that consistency often appreciate how seamlessly spiritual development is integrated alongside early childhood learning.

We recently spoke with a parent who said the teaching staff genuinely treats the kids like family, which is reflected in the low student-to-teacher ratios and the individualized attention each child receives.

The main limitation is clear: the curriculum is faith-centered, so it won’t be a fit for secular households.

For families aligned with its religious approach, though, it offers a grounded and community-focused environment with year-round programming, including active summer sessions.

Pros

  • Small class sizes
  • Active summer programs available
  • Flexible half-day or full-day options
  • Warm and dedicated teachers

Cons

  • Curriculum is not secular
  • Narrow operating hours

Customer Reviews:

I feel so grateful for our time there.

Our lady of Bethlehem has provided not only an exceptionally solid educational foundation for our son but has also guided and molded him in to a loving kind young man.  I truly believe that his attendance at OLB has been imperative to his growth emotionally, spiritually, and educationally.  The love and guidance given to the children at OLB is something rare and unique and I feel so grateful for our time there, we only wish he could stay longer, OLB is and will always remain a part of our family.

They provide a safe and loving place to learn and play.

OLB is such a special place. They provide a safe and loving place for my son to learn and play. The staff and administration are amazing and go above and beyond to teach kids how to be compassionate, empathetic, and resilient.

3. Villa Montessori Preschool Columbus

Website: https://villamontessoripreschool.com/

Address: 8999-A Gemini Pkwy, Columbus, OH 43240

Contact: 614.448.2835

Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Villa Montessori Preschool Columbus emphasizes independent learning in a way that feels very intentional and child-led.

The Montessori structure is clear in how they focus on the learning process itself rather than memorization. This helps children build curiosity and confidence at their own pace.

The environment itself is a big part of the experience. The natural wood materials, calm classroom design, and non-traditional learning spaces like gardens and structured yoga, all reinforce that slower, more grounded approach to early education.

There’s also a strong emotional development angle. Teachers guide kids toward resolving conflicts calmly and building social awareness early on.

One of our researchers who toured the school mentioned how noticeable the sense of independence is even in young classrooms. Children are actively choosing and engaging with activities rather than being directed step-by-step.

The main drawback is location. Being up in the Polaris commercial district makes the commute a real challenge for families coming from central or southern Columbus.

Pros

  • Encourages hands-on independence
  • Individualized learning pace
  • Teaches conflict resolution
  • Beautiful natural wood classrooms

Cons

  • Lengthy commute for southern residents

Address: 5400 Karl Rd, Columbus, OH 43229

Contact: (614) 212-4702

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Community Montessori Columbus operates as a nonprofit Montessori school that focuses heavily on accessibility and authentic Montessori instruction.

The sliding-scale tuition model makes it stand out immediately. It opens the door to families who might otherwise be priced out of private early education

The teaching structure follows core Montessori principles, with AMI-certified staff guiding mixed-age classrooms where older children naturally mentor younger ones.

The emphasis on respect for the physical environment also runs through the daily curriculum in a very consistent way.

A parent we spoke with described the school as having a very close-knit feel once you’re inside, largely because of its small size and limited number of classrooms. That intimacy translates into strong relationships between families and staff.

The biggest challenge is availability. With only two classrooms, enrollment is extremely limited, and most families end up on a long waitlist before securing a spot.

Pros

  • Promotes academic advancement
  • Accepts state childcare vouchers
  • Teaches environmental responsibility
  • Tight-knit school community

Cons

  • Extremely limited enrollment capacity
  • Long and slow-moving waitlists

5. Balanced Family Academy of Upper Arlington

Website: https://www.balancedfamilyacademy.com/

Address: 5150 Reed Road, Columbus, OH 43220

Contact: (614) 745-3305 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Friday: 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Balanced Family Academy of Upper Arlington takes a broader “whole household” approach to childcare that goes beyond traditional preschool care.

The model focuses on convenience and lifestyle support. They combine early education with on-site fitness classes and freshly prepared take-home meals, making it especially appealing for busy parents balancing work and health.

A parent we spoke with mentioned that the early 6:30 AM opening time has been a real advantage for unpredictable schedules, particularly for healthcare and shift-based workers.

The multi-building campus also allows children to move between indoor and outdoor environments, creating a more dynamic daily experience than smaller centers.

Consistency is another strength, with low staff turnover helping children build stable relationships with familiar caregivers during early development.

The app-based communication system is also quite effective for staying connected through daily updates and photos.

However, the tuition is significantly higher than standard daycare options. This makes it less accessible for families without that budget flexibility.

Pros

  • Highly consistent teaching staff
  • Enriched weekly specialty classes
  • Excellent parent communication apps
  • Provides highly nutritious meals

Cons

  • Premium tuition costs

Customer Reviews:

All the teachers and staff are amazing.

Our son has been going to BFA UA since 10 months. All the teachers and staff are amazing. They provide snacks and balanced lunch that my kids love. He attended Kindergarten at BFA this last year and had a wonderful experience. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a caring environment for their kids.

I would highly recommend BFA to any new parents.

I absolutely adore this school and all of the teachers. I have really enjoyed watching my daughter grow up there. She has been attending BFA for 5 years and I feel like we are part of one big family. We have made many close friends there and will continue to grow with them for years to come! We will miss BFA dearly once Bianca graduates from Kindergarten this year. I would highly recommend BFA to any new parents.

We love you BFA! 🙂
