1. Akai Hana

Website: https://akaihana.japanmarketplace.com/
Address: 1173 Old Henderson Rd
Contact: (614) 451-5411
Hours: Mon – Thur 5pm – 9pm, Fri – Sat 4pm – 9pm, Sun 4pm – 8pm
There’s something deeply comforting about a place that has been feeding the community for over 30 years. Tucked away inside the bustling Japan Marketplace, Akai Hana has built massive trust as a long-standing hub for authentic Japanese cuisine.
I recently met up with friends here to tackle one of their massive sushi party boats, and the sheer variety of fresh, buttery cuts completely blew me away.
You’ll find a wonderfully diverse menu featuring everything from classic nigiri to hearty sukiyaki, along with Korean dishes to appease picky eaters. Plus, they offer excellent gluten-free options so everyone can join the feast.
However, a few diners have noted inconsistent service during busy nights and felt the value fell short on premium items.
The food is excellent and clearly authentic
We visited Akai Hana during one of our frequent visits to the Kenny Centre. The food is excellent and clearly authentic. What makes it special is the surrounding area—between the restaurant, the market, and the bakery, it’s the best spot in Columbus for anyone who truly appreciates Japanese culture and cuisine. It feels like a genuine community hub.

Absolutely amazing
This is legit authentic Japanese food.
If you do not like to adventure or go out of your comfort zone with food…then this is not for you.
We came on a Monday evening for dinner and the restaurant was pretty crowded, more than normal what you would expect on a week day.
We had no wait and they sat us down right away and our server was ON TOP of it. She was absolutely amazing and she went by the name “Sarah”.

2. Osaka Ton Katsu

Website: https://www.osaka-tonkatsu.com/
Address: 194 S. High St.
Contact: +1 (614)456-7709
Hours: Mon – Fri 11am – 2pm & 4pm – 7pm, Sat 11am – 6pm
Finding an eatery that dedicates its entire kitchen to one highly specific dish is a rare and exciting treat.
Osaka Ton Katsu centers its whole concept around tonkatsu, delivering a specialized teishoku meal experience that you rarely see outside of larger coastal cities.
This streamlined menu allows the chefs to focus heavily on the textural contrast of tender meat and perfectly crunchy breading.
Your incredibly crispy breaded pork cutlet arrives with steaming rice, savory miso soup, and shredded cabbage to round out the traditional setup.
Diners can even customize their meal by grinding fresh sesame seeds for the savory house-made sauces.
However, the casual disposable containers can make the pricing feel steep, and you might encounter extended wait times if you visit during the chaotic lunch rush.
Good service and large portion of food!
Accidentally found Tonkatsu Restaurant here in Columbus. Pictures looked good as real Japanese restaurant served food so stopped in to get it…was good choice and enjoyed meal. Note restaurant seems like small but it serves like Japanese style. Good service and large portion of food! 🍱

Address: 7370 Sawmill Rd Unit J
Contact: (614) 935-8000
Hours: Mon – Thur 12 PM – 9:30 PM, Fri – Sat 12 PM – 10 PM, Sun 12 PM – 9:30 PM
Nothing quite matches the pure thrill of sitting down to an endless, savory feast of fresh seafood and sizzling hot plates. Takumi Sushi champions an All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) concept with flexible pricing tiers, bringing incredible value to your lunch or dinner plans.
A colleague recently celebrated a birthday here, and they couldn’t stop raving about the upscale atmosphere combined with the sheer joy of unlimited ordering.
The massive menu reaches far beyond basic rolls, offering a robust selection of savory teriyaki dishes and spicy chef specialty creations.
You have a strict 120-minute window to enjoy your food, which helps the kitchen maintain order and minimize unnecessary waste.
Just keep in mind that this popular format naturally draws huge crowds, so prepare yourself for a lengthy wait during peak dinner hours.
The sushi was really fresh and amazing
The sushi was really fresh and amazing. It is prepared fresh on the spot so a the wait was expected and normal. The atmosphere and vibes of the restaurant was up scale as well. Try the Buckeye roll which is my favorite!!!

Completely worth it
I had such a great time at Takumi Sushi. The restaurant is very clean and has an upscale vibe that makes the whole experience feel special. The sushi is prepared by the chef to order, so it can be a bit of a longer wait, but it’s completely worth it because you can really taste the quality. It’s honestly the best sushi ever. My friends and I will definitely be back!

4. Meshikou Ramen

Website: https://www.meshikou.com/ramen
Address: 1506 Bethel Rd
Contact: (614) 457-1689
Hours: Tue – Thur 11am – 9pm, Fri – Sat 11am – 9:30pm, Sun 11am – 9pm
Nailing the perfect bowl of rich, deeply comforting broth requires a serious amount of culinary dedication.
Positioning itself as the city’s first dedicated ramen shop, Meshikou focuses intensely on craft preparation rather than offering a sprawling, generalized menu.
They offer traditional chicken paitan broths, as well as completely unique brothless mazemen bowls. These can be enjoyed in straightforward seating that maintains a very casual, authentic noodle shop vibe that locals absolutely love.
I would recommend them if you need a quick meal on the go, as their efficient carryout system usually has orders packed up in roughly twenty minutes.
On the downside, a few longtime patrons have noticed a slight decline in food consistency over time, and some felt management could have handled minor service complaints better.
Highly recommend this restaurant for Japanese food lovers
The karaage we ordered was excellent and a generous size. The ramen, while not the best I’ve ever had (I prefer tonkotsu), was still very good. I’m willing to look past the ridiculous shower curtains they use to keep customers “safe”, and say that I still highly recommend this restaurant for Japanese food lovers.

Best Japanese Ramen in Columbus, Ohio. My friends and I come here once to twice a week here and the food quality and service never disappoints. The environment is great, friendliness, cleanliness and professionalism. I highly recommend anyone to come here to try what real Japanese ramen is like.

5. HARU Omakase

Website: https://www.haruomakase.com/
Address: 2027 Polaris Parkway
Contact: (614) 696-9682
Hours: Wed – Sat 5pm – 10:30pm
Sometimes you just want to sit back and let a true culinary expert take the wheel for the evening.
Diners seeking a premium, chef-curated tasting journey will fall in love with HARU Omakase, where Executive Chef Yudi Makassau guides guests through an intimate multi-course tour.
You get a front-row seat at the counter to watch the kitchen fuse traditional techniques with bold modern flavors.
The team goes out of their way to source rare, high-quality seafood directly from overseas markets to create an exclusive, reservation-only atmosphere.
But note that this level of premium curation naturally comes with a significantly high price tag that might not fit every budget. And a few visitors have mentioned that the steep cost didn’t completely align with their personal expectations.
Top notch and food presentation and quality is phenomenal
Very good upscale traditional sushi place. Chef is trying very hard to have an amazing experience. With a little bit of effort, this place could become a Michelin guide restaurant. Atmosphere is great even through build out is not very expensive but is done tastefully. Service is top notch and food presentation and quality is phenomenal. Some parents could have been a little bit spicier if not for Ohio but overall this restaurant delivers a very upscale experience.

Very excited to see a high-quality Omakase restaurant
Had a wonderful experience at the chef’s table here this evening. Very excited to see a high quality Omakase restaurant come to Columbus.
The Chef’s menu was thoughtfully prepared, and all of the different combinations were delicious. I thought the presentation of 3 sushi at once in a course was lovely.
Would absolutely recommend.
